The Flemish Radio- and Television Network (VRT) is the public broadcasting network of the Flemish Community.

The VRT's objective is to 'reach a maximum number of viewers and listeners with a range of programmes which excite and satisfy the interest of viewers and listeners.'

This objective and the conditions associated with it, are laid down in the coordinated media decrees as well as in the management contract with the Flemish government. The management contract regulates the rights and obligations of the Flemish Community and the VRT, and specifies the annual financial envelop granted by the Flemish government. The first two management contracts (1997-2001 and 2002-2006) were closed successfully. The third management contract extends until the end of 2011.

The public task of the VRT: key points:

  • Providing a high-quality selection of programmes in the information, entertainment, education and culture sectors.
  • A priority is the focus on information and cultural programmes aimed at the media user. In addition to this there is also sport, contemporary education, self-produced drama productions and entertainment.
  • Providing a sufficient number of programmes that are of interest to a wide public at large on the one hand, and on the other hand, programmes aimed at specific population- and age groups, particularly children and young people.
  • Striving for the greatest possible quality, professionalism, creativity and originality, with attention to new media talent and innovative concepts.
  • Contributing towards the further development of the Flemish cultural identity and diversity and a democratic and tolerant society.
  • Keeping abreast with technological developments so that programmes are also available by way of the new media.

As the public broadcaster of the Flemish Community, the aim of the VRT is to provide society with a special added value. Our public value comprises a cultural, social, democratic, and economic dimension.

Customised networks and brands

By creating distinctive radio- and television networks, the VRT meets its objective of reaching a wide audience as well as certain target groups by way of high-quality programming.

VRT-Television

The TV-programming has three networks: a "linking network" (One), a second channel with an "in-depth network" (Canvas) and a youth network (Ketnet).

VRT-Radio

The Radio-programming has five national networks (Radio 1, Radio 2, Klara, MNM, Studio Brussels) and a world service network (RVi). Each of the networks accommodates a different group of listeners.

More than "classic" radio and television

The VRT keeps a close track of technological developments, as described in its broadcasting mission statement, and, over the past few years, has developed programming that goes beyond traditional radio and television. Digital radio and television, internet radio, the websites of our networks, cross-media programmes, VRT News online, KetnetKick, etc., give traditional radio and television an extra dimension, and above all, provide the media user with more possibilities to use and experience our programming.
