We sent 10 young Flemish and 10 young foreign reporters out into the world, armed with a compact DV-camera. Each of them made a film, a personal account of an exceptional encounter with a boy or a girl, a man or a woman, or a group of people.
These young film makers have one thing in common: they portray their subjects with a genuine compassion, occasionally peppered with gentle humour, but sometimes also permeated with outrage about the conditions in which some people are obliged to live.
For some of our filmmakers this was their first major TV commission. Their authentic talent and the disarming wonder with which they observe the world around them was what attracted our attention.
We found their foreign colleagues at festivals that showcase the most striking work of up-and-coming young documentary makers from all over the world. What we loved and still love about them is actually very simple: these young reporters are artists and the camera is their brush. Each of them employs it expertly, sometimes unconventionally, but always creatively. And when they open up their hearts they also touch ours.
To foster and promote their authenticity, we allowed them to film without imposing any requirements with regard to form, content, style, length, etc. Authenticity, craftsmanship, compassion, wonder, commitment, solidarity and respect for the values and norms of others, that is the spirit that makes Tarantino's World go round.
