GM poplars planted in Ghent

Flemish Economy Minister Patricia Ceysens (centrist liberal) has planted the first of a batch of genetically manipulated poplars.
The planting ceremony signals the start of a field test by scientists at Ghent University.

Initially the Belgian Government refused to issue permission for the test, but has now relented.

The GM poplars will provide more bio ethanol than non treated trees.

The Flemish ecologist party Groen! is opposed to the trials and handed the Economy Minister an indigenous Belgian oak tree.
