Germinal Beerschot 3-1 KV Mechelen

Germinal Beerschot won their final home game of the season on Friday evening. Goals by Haroun, Dosumnu, and Munyaneza were enough to see off near-neighbours KV Mechelen. Surprisingly the game didn’t start with a minute’s silence in remembrance of the former Germinal Beerschot player François Sterchele who died in a road accident on 8 May 2008.
Another fact worthy of note was the boycott of the game by all but about 20 KV Mechelen supporters.

The Malinwa fans say that aren’t allowed enough tickets for away matches.
On the field Dunkovic, was back in KV Mechelen’s starting line-up.
Meanwhile, Haroun was crowned player of the season by Germinal Beerschot.

Haroun thanked the club and its fans for the honour early on with a goal after just seven minutes.

The Rats should have gone two up on 15 minutes, but Munyaneza’s (photo) goal was incorrectly adjudged to have been off-side.

The rest of the half saw Germinal Beerschot continue to create chances.

However, KV Mechelen started to come into the game more and both Vleminckx and Persoons came close to scoring an equaliser.

Second half goals

On the hour Kpaka passed to Dosumnu whose powerful shot put Germinal Beerschot 2-0 up.

The home side appeared to be satisfied with a 2-0 lead.

However, the KV Mechelen substitute Rossini made it 2-1 on 68 minutes.

The visitors pushed forward in search of an equaliser.

All hope was gone for KV Mechelen when Munyaneza headed Germinal Beerschot’s third goal of the night on 87 minutes.

Germinal Beerschot is now eleventh in the table with 42 points from 33 games.

KV Mechelen is tenth on 43 points.
