Standard: Belgian champs once again

Standard de Liège retain the Belgian title after a 1-0 win over Anderlecht in the decisive playoff match on Sunday evening. Thursday's first leg at Anderlecht ended in a 1-1 draw, putting pressure on Anderlecht to score at least one time to stay in the running for the title.
In the 39th minutes Anderlecht's Victor Bernardez took Dieumerci Mbokani down in the penalty box. Axel Witsel converted the penalty into the only goal of the match.
The first half of the match was rather disappointing for the spectators, with neither side showing champion level football. That said, the defending champions were able to score the one and only goal of the match.

In the 39th minutes Anderlecht's Victor Bernardez took Dieumerci Mbokani down in the penalty box. Axel Witsel converted the penalty into the only goal of the match, earning Standard a 2-1 victory on aggregate. In the first leg on Thursday at Anderlecht it was a 1-1 draw.

After an hour of play Anderlecht looked set to get a penalty when Liege keeper Sinan Bolat saved a ball but went a bit further, ploughing into Anderlecht's Mbark Boussoufa.
Arguably one of Anderlecht's best players went down and needed medical attention. It looked at first like he was knocked unconscious but after some minutes he got up and referee Allaerts let the play continue without a card.

The second half of the match was much more exciting to watch. The home team and defending champs dominated, but Anderlecht caught fire in the last phase of play trying to win back the title which they lost to Standard a year ago.

Standard were steadfast however and allowed no leeway or goals from the visitors. A 1-1 draw would have taken the match into extra time and possibly a penalty shoot-out to determine the champions.
A playoff was needed after both clubs finished the regular first division football season level with 77 points each. Last season Standard won their first league title in 25 years.

Liege dethroned Brussels-based Anderlecht last term to claim their first Belgian first division crown in 25 years. They have now taken their overall tally to 10.
