De Lijn surpasses 500 million passengers

The public transport company De Lijn transported more than half a billion people last year- an absolute record. The growth is thanks to the swelling number of pass holders and extra service.
De Lijn wants to expand the bus and tram network. It is asking the Flemish government to double subsidies to 230 million euro per year. The more people take public transportation the less traffic there will be on the roads.
The rise in passenger traffic was the biggest in Flemish Brabant and East Flanders. De Lijn wants to expand the network even further. The Flemish public transport company is asking the Flemish government to double its subsidies to €230 million.

Public transportation should be encouraged and supported, according to De Lijn. It is better for the environment for fewer people to be driving. Plus, the more people take public transportation the less traffic there will be on the roads.
