The police have detained 2 men connection with the robbery in Home Brugmann, a nursing home in Ukkel (Brussels) which resulted in a robbery. The first suspect reportedly arrested is a 23 year old man from Vorst (Forest, Brussels). According to later reports a second suspect has been detained.

Two armed and masked men forced their way into the Home Brugmann old folks' home in Ukkel yesterday. They wanted to steal the money from the cash desk. The situation turned ugly and shots were fired. 2 employees of the nursing home were wounded. One of them died in hospital.

An hour before the hold-up in Ukkel a nursing home in Vorst was held-up. The police think that the same two men were involved in both robberies.
In reaction Home Affairs Minister Annemie Turtelboom (photo, Flemish liberal) said yesterday that she wanted to talk with the directors of several nursing homes to discuss measures that might be taken to ensure more security in nursing and retirement homes.

Hans Bonte, the director of the welfare department in Vilvoorde, hopes that we will not resort to exaggerated security in the homes.

"In the United States retirement homes resemble strong fortresses."  The price tag for such homes is astronomical, points out Mr Bonte.
