Kroes makes promise on Opel

The European Commission has pledged to scrutinise the deal under which the Canadian auto parts manufacturer Magna gains control of the European carmaker Opel.
Competition commissioner Neelie Kroes met with Flemish Premier Kris Peeters (Christian democrat) on Wednesday.

Mr Peeters wants the European Commission to ensure that Opel's Antwerp plant gets a fair chance to survive.

He is worried that German politicians are exerting pressure to take a decision that is against the interests of the Antwerp plant.

The Flemish Government intends to file a complaint if European competition regulations are flouted.
