Dry spell threatens crops

The dry weather we have had over the past few months is causing problems for the harvest of potatoes and corn. The farmers union Boerenbond fears that the result will be poorer quality products.
The summer this year in Belgium was dry though apparently not exceptionally so. But, according to the Boerenbond farmers union the humidity in the air was exceptionally low this year.
Normally potatoes are harvested the beginning of September but this year, due to the low humidity they have not yet been harvested because otherwise they could be damaged.

For corn the problem is different. Normally corn is harvested the second half of October, but now, a month earlier, the corn is already ready for harvest.

According to the Boerenbond the result of an upset in normal harvest schedule will be a poorer quality product.
