Budget for cycle paths hardly touched

The Flemish municipalities are hardly taking advantage of the budgets earmarked to construct bicycle paths. Minister of Public Works, Hilde Crevits (Flemish Christian democrat) plans to look in to the procedure of drawing on the funds to determine whether this is an obstacle. If necessary she will simplify the procedure.

From 2000 the Flemish government has made a budget of €350 million available to municipalities to lay bicycle paths. €265 of this budget has remained unused.

It is a 'long procedure', concedes the minister, and she wants to know if this is the reason why municipalities are not taking advantage of the funds available. If this turns out to be the case she wants to modify the procedure.

Further Minister Crevits wants to analyse the situation, case by case, to determine what the problem might be. "It's possible that the combination with other items, such as the expropriation procedure makes it too complicated. We need to look at the situation, case by case, to see how we can speed things up," says Minister Crevits.
