"Flemish government will have to decide"

The Antwerp city council will give a negative recommendation for the construction permit of the 'Lange Wapper' bridge project: a plan to complete the Antwerp orbital by constructing a tunnel under the River Scheldt and a viaduct over the port area. The Antwerp city council unanimously approved a resolution Monday evening to give a negative recommendation for the building permit.

Antwerp and the politicians were divided over the best proposal to tackle the mobility problems of the port city. The Antwerp city council decided in a special meeting Monday evening to discuss the referendum to close the ranks.

The entire city council unanimously approve a resolution which reflects the outcome of the referendum: they will give a negative recommendation for the construction permit of the Lange Wapper.

The Flemish Christian democrats and the Flemish conservative nationalist party N-VA believe that the project is not totally dead and buried. In their opinion, the project could still be viable with some major adaptations.

The recommendation by the Antwerp city council will be handed over to the Flemish government on Friday. It will then be up to the Flemish government to decide on the best solution for the Antwerp orbital.
