More mentally ill go to gaol

It has emerged that Belgian prisons accommodate over a thousand people who have either been interned, are mentally handicapped or are mentally ill.

The figure corresponds to one out of every ten inmates.

In recent years the number of people who have been interned and end up in prison has soared.

The Prisons Management says that penitentiaries were not built to accommodate these people.

Each prison is equipped with a team of dedicated carers. By 2012 400 internees will be cared for in two new medical centres in Ghent and Antwerp.
