AA Gent wins East Flemish derby

AA Gent has consolidated its position in third place in the Belgian First Division after a 1-0 win against near-neighbours Sporting Lokeren. Lokeren were the better side in the first half and will feel aggrieved that a dubious off-side decision denied Smajic an opening goal.

Things went from bad to worse for Lokeren when Carevic missed a penalty on 34 minutes. The first half ended goalless.

Lokeren remained the more dangerous team in front of goal during the second half.

However, the home side failed to score. AA Gent was awarded a penalty six minutes from time, but the Bernd Thijs’ spot-kick was saved by the Lokeren keeper Lazic.

It was Stijn De Smet’s (photo) goal in the first minute of injury time that made the difference for the Buffaloes.

AA Gent has now won six in a row and has 36 points from 19 games. Sporting Lokeren remains second to bottom on 15 points

Racing Genk 2-2

Racing Genk failed to take all three points from their home match against Zulte Waregem.

Despite the freezing conditions in Genk’s Cristal Arena, the atmosphere soon heated up with plenty of attacking football from both sides.

Genk opened the scoring though Ogunjim.

However, the Limburgers’ joy was short-lived, as an own goal by their defender Tiago levelled the score just seven minutes later.

Zulte Waregem went down to ten men on 36 minutes when Khaleem Hyland was given his second yellow card for a fowl on Genk’s Dugary.

However, Genk was unable to make the most of their one-man advantage and Zulte Waregem went 2-1 up on 66 minutes through Teddy Chevalier.

Genk went all out on the attack and drew level 11 minutes from time through Marvin Ogunjimi (photo).

The draw sees Zulte Waregem confirm their position in fifth place with 30 points from 19 games.

Racing Genk is 12th on 19 points.

Canaries on song in Roeselare

Sint-Truiden enjoyed a 2-1 win away at bottom club Roeselare.

All three goals came during the last 12 minutes of the match. Roeselare took the lead on 78 minutes through Stefan Nikolic, only for Sint-Truiden to equalise just a minute later.

An Ibrahim Sidbe goal in the final minute of the game sealed it for the Canaries.

Kortrijk and Westerlo draw

Hundreds of KV Kortrijk fans worked hard during the whole of Saturday afternoon to clear the pitch in the Golden Spurs Stadium of snow.

They were rewarded with a well-deserved draw.

Westerlo took the lead on 50 minutes through Dekelver.

Brecht Capon scored Kortrijk’s goal five minutes from time.

Kortrijk is 6th in the table with 28 points from 19 games. Westerlo are 10th on 23 points.
