Belgian women score in Australia

After Kim Clijsters and Yanina Wickmayer, Justine Henin has now also placed for the second round of the Australian Open. Kirsten Flipkens unfortunately had to meet fellow Belgian Justine Henin in the first round and was eliminated in 2 sets of 6-4 and 6-3. Olivier Rochus was eliminated, losing to Feranando Gonzalez of Chile in the first round.

Wickmayer survived a marathon match

Yanina Wickmayer moves on to the second round of the Australian Open after a very difficult, marathon match against Alexandra Dulgheru of Rumania.

The Belgian lost the first set by a long shot. The first set ended at 1 game to 6 in favour of Dulgheru. Wickmayer came back to win the second set by 6 games to 4. The third set went into a tiebreak which finally tilted in the favour of Yanina Wickmayer 10-8.

The marathon match lasted some 3.5 hours, but was interrupted several times by rain. Winning the decisive set by 10-8 in the tiebreak, Yanina Wickmayer said, "It was not my best day... It's super that I could win anyway! I'm really happy!"

Kim Clijsters placed easily for the next round

Kim Clijsters had no problem placing for the second round of the Australian Open. She beat Valérie Tétreault of Canada in two sets of 6-0 and 6-4.

Clijsters: "I had a good feeling on the court. I was off to good start with my serve as well. I've been working on it during the last week."

Although it seemed to be a piece of cake for Clijsters, she is happy that the first round is over. "There can always be surprises right in the first round," pointed out the Belgian 'Comeback Mom'. In the next round Clijsters will probably play against Sesil Karatantsjeva of Bulgaria, who lost to Justine Henin in the tournament of Brisbane (Clijsters beat Henin in the final).

Henin beat Flipkens in Belgian head-on-head

Kirsten Flipkens had the misfortune of having to meet Justine Henin in the first round of Henin's first grand slam tournament since her comeback to tennis. Henin, winner of the Australia Open in 2004 finished the set off in a little over an hour and in 2 sets of 6-4 and 6-3.

Justine Henin will probably play against Jelena Dementjeva of the Czech Republic in her next round for a much tougher match. Jelena Dementjeva is WTA 5.

Olivier Rochus was eliminated in the first round

Olivier Rochus lost his first round match in the Australian Open. Former finalist of the Australian Open, Fernando Gonzalez of Chile beat the Belgian in four sets of 6-3, 6-4, 3-6 and 6-1.
