KV Mechelen move up into the top five in the Belgian First Division after a 1-0 home win against Germinal Beerschot. It was Germinal Beerschot’s fifth consecutive defeat. The Antwerp club that had been doing so well before Christmas has now dropped out of the top six.

KV Mechelen’s well-earned winning goal came twelve minutes from time when Yoni Buyens’ left-foot shot beat the Germinal Beerschot keeper Pacovski.

Earlier KV Mechelen’s Nong came close to scoring with a header.

Germinal Beerschot’s best effort came from MacDonald on the hour.

However, his shot went over the bar. It was a good result for KV Mechelen.

With six matches to go until the first division splits into two play-off pools, KV Mechelen are in the top six.

This would see them playing against the cream of Belgian football for a place in Europe.
