Flecha victorious in Gent

The Spaniard Juan Antonio Flecha of the British Team Sky has won this year’s Het Nieuwsblad Cycle Race. He got the better of the Belgian Philippe Gilbert in the race’s finale to be first across the finishing line in the East Flemish city of Gent.

Frederik Veuchelen (Vacansoleil), Frédéric Guesdon Roger Kluge and Roy Curvers broke free of the peloton after just 10km. They soon were twelve minutes ahead.

However, after the infamous climb of the Geraardsbergen Wall, their lead was reduced to just six minutes.

At the Taaiberg the Belgian Champion Tom Boonen decided to step up a gear and was able to gain a couple of kilometres advantage.

However, Boonen’s dreams of taking the race for the First time in his career were shattered when he was forced to change a wheel.

Nuyens looked strong but fell back due to a flat tyre.

Towards the end of the race, Philippe Gilbert and Juan Antonio Flecha pulled out in front.

However, in the end it was the Spaniard that took the race.

He is the first Spaniard ever to win the race. It is his first race win since the Franco-Belge in 2008.
