More Belgians are lighting up

For the second year in a row there has been an increase in the number of Belgians who smoke. Thirty-two percent of Belgians now light up on a daily basis.

In 2007 the figure dipped to twenty-seven percent. By 2008 it had already risen back up to thirty percent.

The figures come from the Anti-Cancer Foundation.

Men are the most enthusiastic smokers.

The rise is partly due to the large number of people who packed in the habit, but who have failed to give up for good.

The Anti-Cancer Foundation blames the rise on the fact that tobacco products have not risen in price and the delay in the introduction of a full ban on smoking in pubs.
