Tennis misery for Belgium

Belgium has been knocked out of this season’s Davis Cup. Saturday’s doubles defeat at the hands of the Czechs means that the result of Sunday’s matches is purely academic. Belgium’s elimination in the first round of the competition means that our men will have to compete in this September’s play-offs.

Already 2-0 down after Friday’s matches, it was crunch time for the Belgians.

All hope was resting on Steve Darcis and Olivier Rochus winning the doubles.

However, it was not to be and the Czechs Tomas Berdych and Radek Stepanek proved too strong for the Belgians

Darcis and Rochus started well and were 5-3 ahead at one stage in the first set.

They forced a tiebreak, but lost their cool, allowing the Czech to take the first set 6-7.

The second set was nothing short of a whitewash with the Belgians failing to take a single game.

It was more of the same in a third set that ended 3-6 to the Czechs.

Last year's Davis Cup runners up have shown their worth, leaving the Belgians far behind.
