More foreigners caught speeding on our roads

The number of foreign-registered vehicles caught speeding on Belgian roads was up 75% last year. A total of 164,000 foreign-registered vehicles were caught by speed cameras and police radars.

The increase in the number of speed cameras has no doubt played an important role in fuelling the increase.

However, many of the foreign drivers caught speeding get off Scott-free.

Koen Ricour of the Federal Police told the VRT that unless foreign speeders are intercepted and fined on the spot, there are often big problems tracing them and getting them to pay their speeding fine.

"With some countries its easier than with others.”

“However, we normally try and intercept foreign speeders and fine them on the spot”, Mr Rocourt added.
