Standard de Liège miss their start

In football, former champions Standard de Liège have lost their match in Sint-Truiden, 1-0. It was the opening match of the fourth round of play. Standard have only picked up 5 points in 4 matches and have missed their start.

Standard celebrated back-to-back league titles in 2008 and 2009, but lost the momentum last season, failing to claim a European ticket in the domestic competition.

With three top strikers gone (Milan Jovanovic, Igor De Camargo and Dieumerci Mbokani) it is now up to the youngsters to lead the Liège team. However, a match at local rivals Sint-Truiden in Staaien is always a tough one for Standard.

Sint-Truiden showed a lot of determination and took the lead after only 2 minutes through striker Ibrahima Sidibe (photo on top: Sint-Truiden players celebrating and Standard goalkeeper Sinan Bolat, see also small photo).

Sint-Truiden, also dubbed the Canaries and playing in yellow, later had their chances to double the score, while Standard striker Christian Benteke had some golden opportunities to equalise for Standard, but both parties missed their chances.

Standard have picked up just 1 win in 4 matches and are left with 5 points, a disappointing start to their season.
