KRC Genk not to be stopped

In football, KRC Genk added another victory to their impressive record this season. This time, the victim was Zulte Waregem, 3-0. The win was not as easy as the figures suggest though. AA Gent climbed to second place after downing Sint-Truiden.

KRC Genk - Zulte Waregem 3-0

The Limburgers of RC Genk had a difficult start against Zulte Waregem and were happy that their goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois, made some top-notch saves to keep the score at 0-0 at the break.

After the break, Genk upped the pressure. Substitute Elyaniv Barda of Israel was the man of the match. First, he gave an assist for the league's leading scorer Jelle Vossen, who scored with a deflected shot.

In 7 minutes' time, it was 3-0 and the match was as good as finished. Barda first converted a penalty and added a third one for Genk after an excellent individual effort.

Genk have now 25 points from 9 matches. They are still waiting for their first defeat this season. The goal difference is 29 against 6.

AA Gent - Sint-Truiden 2-0

AA Gent have wiped out the disappointment of last Wednesday (when they lost at Lokeren) with a home victory against Sint-Truiden.

Ghent missed a couple of key players, but had the better chances after a poor first quarter. Midfielder Stijn De Smet had his shot blocked by goalkeeper Sven Van der Jeugt, but got the ball back and scored at his second attempt, 1-0 just before the break.

Sint-Truiden could hardly worry the hosts. AA Gent upped the pressure slowly but surely and Senegalese striker Elimane Coulibaly doubled the score after 68 minutes.

AA Gent look ready to host Lille in the Europa League on Thursday. After the defeat at Levski Sofia, a win is needed to play a role in the group.

Lierse SK have the momentum

In other action yesterday, Lierse SK posted their first win of the season at Charleroi. For new Lierse coach Eric Van Meir it was a second success, after holding Anderlecht to a 1-all draw last Wednesday. Lierse striker Peter Kovacs scored the only goal of the game on 58 minutes.

Standard are confirming their comeback with a win at Westerlo. Gohi Bi Cyriac scored both goals (2-1). Lokeren beat bottom-of-the-table Eupen. The German-speaking team had hopes for success under new coach Albert Cartier, but will have to wait a bit longer for their first victory of the season.
