Too many pacemakers prescribed?

The number of pacemakers implanted in Belgium is 25% above the European average. Researchers have not been able to discover any objective reason why more pacemakers should be used in Belgium.

The Belgian Healthcare Centre claims that often the use of a pacemaker is recommended without any clear scientific benefit.

In 2007 the Belgian health insurance paid towards 11,000 pacemakers. The Healthcare Centre argues that only use of pacemakers that can be scientifically justified should be reimbursed.

A pacemaker is an electronic device that is implanted to support the heart and achieve a satisfactory heartbeat.
