AA Gent move past Kortrijk in two minutes

In football, AA Gent have climbed to second place after downing KV Kortrijk. Sint-Truiden meanwhile are in dire straits after a heavy defeat by bottom-of-the-table Eupen.

AA Gent - KV Kortrijk 2-0

AA Gent controlled the game, but midfielder Stijn De Smet missed an excellent opportunity before the break.

It was playmaker Randall Azofeifa (photo on top) of Costa Rica who broke the deadlock for the hosts after an hour of play.

First, he scored with a thundering free kick, before setting up the second goal only two minutes later. Azofeifa passed the ball to Belgian international Yassine El Ghanassy who beat Kortrijk goalkeeper Glenn Verbauwhede, 2-0. AA Gent look ready for their European encounter with Sporting Lisbon in the Europa League, next Thursday.

Eupen - Sint-Truiden 6-0

The most remarkable score of the evening was the 6-0 thrashing of Sint-Truiden by newcomers Eupen.

Eupen had not won a single match in the top flight, and had only scored four goals in 10 matches before the game. However, they played for the first time in their new stadium and this gave them wings.

The visitors of STVV, also dubbed the Canaries, had to swallow 3 goals in 13 minutes before the break. The score at half-time was 4-0. Strikers Erwin Vandenbergh and Ervin Zukanovic both scored twice. The defeat came as a heavy blow for Sint-Truiden. STVV seem to have lost the momentum completely.

Westerlo - KV Mechelen 1-1

The draw doesn't help either team very much. Westerlo took the lead through Paulo Enrique, but Julien Gorius equalised before the break. After a strong start to the season, KVM can only just keep their place in the top 6. Only the teams in the top 6 will play the play-off round 1 to decide on the title at the end of the season.

Germinal Beerschot - Lierse 1-1

Newly promoted Lierse held Germinal Bereschot to a draw in the Antwerp derby, another success for new Lierse coach Eric Van Meir. Tomasz Radzinski put the visitors ahead after only 5 minutes, but Junior Negrao equalised before the break. Lierse were reduced to 10 men when Akwety Mensah was sent off on 57 minutes, but stood strong and kept the hosts to a draw with a bit of luck.

Charleroi - Lokeren 1-2

Lokeren have the momentum. The win at Charleroi was the fourth successive victory for the East Flemings, who are slowly but surely making their way up the table. Defender Sepp De Roover put the visitors ahead after only 10 minutes. Charleroi equalised through Hermanni Vuorinen, but it was Ivan Leko who added a second one for Lokeren. The home defeat is another disappointment for Charleroi. The Walloon team is facing a tough relegation battle.
