Dead toddler's parents charged

Both the mother and the father of Younes Jratlou have been charged with manslaughter after inflicting blows and injuries on their son. The body of the 4-year-old was recovered from the River Leie nearly a year ago.

The charges were made after police again searched the home of the parents of Younes Jratlou. The body of the 4-year-old was recovered from the River Leie nearly a year ago.

The 4-year-old went missing from his home in Le Bizet, part of Comines in Hainault province on the night of 25 October 2009. When the investigation started Younes’s brother told detectives that the boy had taken off after his parents had had a row.

Two weeks later his body was found in a lock on the River Leie, some ten kilometres from Le Bizet. For a time his father Mohammed Jratlou was seen as a suspect, but Tournai public prosecutors were unable to discover any evidence to implicate the parent.

On Monday evening the police searched Younes's parents' home including his bedroom. Investigators were accompanied by the school head of Younes’s school where his brother is still a pupil. Detectives later left the house carrying plastic bags. The house was sealed by the police and Younes’s father was taken away for questioning.
