AA Gent squeeze past Levski in the snow

In football, AA Gent boosted their chances of qualifying for the second round in the UEFA Europa League after downing Bulgaria's Levski Sofia. Anderlecht's chances received a heavy blow as the Brussels club lost in Saint Petersburg.

After a balanced first half, AA Gent upped the pressure in the second half. Brazilian winger Wallace scored the only goal of the match 12 minutes from time, 1-0 (photo on top).

The win takes the Buffaloes to second place in the Europa League's Group C. The match was played in snowy conditions with some claiming that the game should have been postponed. "I am very proud of my team, we should enjoy this win", AA Gent Francky Dury told reporters.

Sporting Portugal leads the group with 12 points after beating Lille in the other match, 1-0. Sporting already have their ticket for the next round. On the final day of play, AA Gent travel to the North of France to face Lille. It's all or nothing for the French: a win will allow them to move past Gent and take second place, while a draw is enough for the East Flemings to qualify for the second round.

Anderlecht facing European exit

The Belgian champions Anderlecht are meanwhile facing an early exit from European football. Anderlecht were wrapped up by Zenit in Saint Petersburg, 3-1. The match also took place in icy conditions. The Russians had already won the first leg, in Anderlecht.

The loss means that Anderlecht will have to win their final match against Hajduk Split, while hoping that AEK Athens are beaten by Zenit.

The third Belgian team in the Europa League, Club Brugge, will meet PAOK Saloniki of Greece this evening, and need a win to revive their chances.
