Belgian victories at the Australian Open

The Belgians have got off to a good start in the first round of the 2011 Australian Open. Justine Henin, Yanina Wickmayer and Xavier Malisse all won their first round matches in three sets.

Justine Henin (WTA 13) had a difficult time in her match against the Indian Sania Mirza.(WTA 145) .

It took the former world number one three sets to see off the 24-year-old from Mumbai. Mirza took the first set 5-7. Henin had her back against the wall but was able to win the second set 6-3 before taking the third set with little more ease 6-1.

Justine Henin will play Britain’s Elena Baltacha (WTA 55) in the second round.

Yanina Wickmayer (WTA 24) played her first match of the tournament in the largest stadium, the Rod Laver Arena.

She beat the Australian Jarmila Groth in three set 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. Yanina Wickmayer’s second round opponent is the Latvian Anastasia Sevastova (WTA 46).

The only Belgian man competing at this year’s Australian Open, Xavier Malisse (ATP 45), had little trouble seeing off the Spaniard Pablo Andujar (ATP – 70).

Malisse won the match 6-1, 6-2, 7-6 (7/3), he will take on another Spaniard Albert Montanes (ATP 26) in the second round.
