New drug kills in Ostend

The police have issued a warning for a new lethal drug that has appeared for a first time in Belgium. At the beginning of the month the drug led to the death of a man in the seaside resort of Ostend.

The police say that so far two people have ended up in a life-threatening condition after using the drug. One user, in Ostend (West Flanders), died. Earlier a drug dealer was taken to hospital after he became seriously ill. The dealer is on the mend.

The drug consists of a mix of speed and cathinone, a chemical version of khat, a plant that is chewed for its mind-expanding properties in Yemen and Somali. Cathinone looks like a yellow powder.

When consumed, body temperature can rise suddenly ,endangering the user's life.
