Common wood pigeon should beware

Common wood pigeons should beware this weekend: at locations across Flanders the bird is being hunted down and killed.

Farmers say that the common wood pigeon causes a lot of damage to new crops. The Farmers Union maintains that scarecrows and broadcasting the sound of birds of prey do little to deter the birds.

Pigeons may be shot throughout the month of February, but Flemish famers and hunting associations chose this weekend to focus on killing pigeons.

Hunting pigeons is regulated by Flemish hunting rules. The bird conservation society 'Vogelbescherming Vlaanderen' insists that this co-ordinated hunt for pigeons will not have any impact whatsoever.
