Standard keep play-off ambitions burning

Standard de Liège have found their best form again, confirming their ambitions for taking part in the final play-off round. Standard posted a convincing 3-0 win against KV Mechelen. Sint-Truiden meanwhile remain in dire straits.

Standard welcomed back midfielder Steven Defour after a long injury spell and his presence gave the team a real boost. Defour's return allowed Standard coach Dominique D'Onofrio to field his favourite midfield, with also Axel Witsel, Franck Berrier and Mehdi Carcela.

Standard dominated play from the start and left Malinwa no other prospect then returning home empty-handed. Belgian international Axel Witsel (photo on top) scored twice, with Senegal striker Mbaye Leye beating Mechelen goalkeeper Olivier Renard (small photo) once.

The win leaves Standard in 7th place, but the "Rouches" (or Reds) have reduced the gap with number 6 in the standings, Lokeren, to just 1 point with 3 rounds of play to go.

At the other end of the table, Sint-Truiden are still in trouble after being whipped 0-3 on home soil by Cercle Bruges.
