Spain through to Davis Cup quarter-finals

Spain has gained a place in the quarter-finals of this year’s Davis Cup. After two defeats for Belgium in the singles on Friday, Belgium’s doubles team of Steve Darcis and Olivier Rochus lost in the doubles to Spain’s Fernando Verdasco en Feliciano Lopez in three sets 6-7 (0-7), 4-6, 3-6 on Saturday.

The 3-0 score in Spain’s favour meant that the results of Sunday’s matches would be purely academic.

One of the main attractions in Charleroi was Spain's Rafael Nadal, one of the world's best tennis players. He was especially popular with the female supporters.

Belgium must now fight it out in the play-offs to keep a place in the World Group.
