Soccer: last-gasp miracle for Standard

In football, Standard kept FC Bruges to a draw in Sunday's summit match (2-2). Bruges looked set to stun the hosts, but lost it in the dying minutes of the game. At the bottom of the table, Lierse and Eupen drew 1-1.

It was Standard's chance to move back into the top 6 for the season-ending play-offs, as number 6 KV Mechelen had lost points on Saturday.

Standard were the favourites to keep the 3 points home as the Rouches (or Reds, as they are dubbed) were in the winning mood.

However, FC Bruges stunned the home team with an excellent ball circulation and lots of ball possession. This did not result in any chances though, 0-0 at the break.

Standard upped the pressure after the break, but FC Bruges scored twice in 7 minutes' time through Ivan Perisic and Joseph Akpala.

A big disappointment for Standard, but the Liège team did not give up the fight and managed to clinch a draw in the extra time. Mehdi Carcela set the stadium on fire with a shot from close range.

Lierse and Eupen draw

In other action on Sunday, Lierse and Eupen drew 1-all. Eupen, the only representative of the German language community in the top flight, came 0-1 in the opening minute but Lierse equalised. The draw is not of much help to either of the teams, which are facing relegation.
