Bank robberies: fewer attempts, but more are successful

The number of attempted bank robberies in Belgium has fallen by a third in only three years. In 2006 there were 130 attempted bank robberies across Belgium. By 2009 the figure had fallen back to 89.

Belgian Interior Minister Annemie Turtelboom (Flemish liberal) says that between 2006 and 2009 the number of attempted bank robberies fell both in Flanders and Wallonia. In Brussels, on the other hand, there was an increase.

On average only around 70 % of bank robberies are successful, though in 2009 the success rate soared to 76.4 % despite lower overall figures.

In 2009 people attempting a bank robbery were most successful in Wallonia (81 %), while only 61 % of would-be bank robbers got away with any loot in Flanders.
