King Albert in Rome for Beatification of John Paul II

During a ceremony on St Peter's Square in Rome Pope Benedict XVI, the leader of the world's Roman Catholics, has beatified his predecessor, Pope John Paul II.

The fast-track beatification follows what Catholics believe was the miraculous recovery of a French nun who was suffering from Parkinson’s disease.

A million people attended the ceremony including Belgium's King Albert and Queen Paola. Belgium's caretaker Prime Minister Yves Leterme (Flemish Christian democrat) and the European President Herman Van Rompuy were also there. A more controversial guest was the Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe.
