N-VA: “Mr Di Rupo should get first go as Formateur”

Bart De Wever, the leader of Belgium's largest political party, the Flemish nationalist N-VA, says that a 'Formateur' should be appointed as soon as possible. In addition to the ongoing talks on state reforms the Formateur's job should be to initiate negotiations on social economic issues.

Mr De Wever was speaking on VRT's politics show De Zevende Dag.

The leader of the Flemish nationalists believes that the Francophone socialist Elio Di Rupo should get the first opportunity to form a new government, but if he is reluctant Mr De Wever is prepared to do the job himself.

In recent days several N-VA heavy weights including Mr De Wever indicated that the political talks could not continue endlessly. The end of April was mooted as a deadline, but the N-VA has decided not to enforce it.

Bart De Wever: 'It's clear that we will soon reach a new phase. In recent days we have worked well with the Royal Mediator and have agreed that he may complete his mission properly. Mr Beke has done a lot of good work. It's clear we enter a new phase soon, the end game and against this background an ultimatum would be detrimental."

The Flemish nationalists explicitly say that they do not desire fresh elections. Until now the N-VA has always insisted that agreement on state reforms was needed before social economics matters could be addressed.
