Mons joins the top flight

RAEC Mons is to return to the Belgian First Division. The Dragons enjoyed a 2-1 win in an exciting test match against Waasland-Beveren in Tubize (Walloon Brabant) on Sunday afternoon. The Walloon club returns to the top flight after an absence of two seasons.

As both Waasland-Beveren and Mons finished the Second Division play-offs level on points and the matches won, a test match was required to decide which of them would gain promotion to the First Divison.

With so much at stake it proved to be an exciting match. Mons took the lead through Jarju (photo) two minutes before half time, a lead they maintained until Borabia equalised for Beveren on 66 minutes.

The match seemed to be heading for extra time. However, Timmermans put Mons back in front on 87 minutes to make for a final score of 2-1 to the Dragons.

The party is already under way in Tubize and will no doubt go on until late in the once the supporters return to Mons.
