Fake police officers get away with 50,000

Thieves who dressed up as police officers have succeeded in getting away with 50,000 euros worth of savings from an elderly couple in the leafy Ghent suburb of Sint-Martens-Latem.

The fraudsters were wearing police uniforms when they rang the bell at the couple's home; They showed the centenarian resident and his 78-year-old wife a forged police warrant card and used a subterfuge to gain entry to their home.

While one of the thieves distracted the elderly couple, his accomplice broke into a drawer in the bedroom and stole 50,000 euros in jewellery and banknotes.

The couple only noticed the theft after the thieves had long gone.
