Nuclear plant operators face increased liability

The Federal Parliament Commission dealing with large companies, has approved a bill to increase the liability of nuclear plant operators. Their financial liability will be extended to 1.2 billion euros, although the green party Groen! is pressing for an unlimited liability.

In future, nuclear plant operators in Belgium will have to come up with a bigger financial compensation if something goes wrong. Their financial liability will be extended to 1.2 billion euros.

The present liability was set at 297 million euros in legislation that was passed in 1985. The sharp increase which is coming up, has everything to do with the nuclear disaster in Fukushima, where an earthquake and a tsunami caused serious damage to the local nuclear plants.

Still, not everybody is happy with the new bill. The Flemish greens of Groen! suggest that the liability of the nuclear plant operators should have no limits (photo: the nuclear plant of Doel in East Flanders).
