Philippe Gilbert moves to Cadel Evans' BMC team

In cycling, the BMC Racing Team has signed Belgian champion Philippe Gilbert on a three-year contract from 2012. In the Swiss-American team, Gilbert will ride alongside Tour de France winner Cadel Evans and Norwegian cycling great Thor Hushovd.

Belgium's Philippe Gilbert (29) emerged as one of the world's leading professional cyclists this season, winning a whole series of classic and semi-classic races and taking a stage win in the Tour de France, where he also wore the yellow, green and polkadot jerseys.

Gilbert is expected to act as the team leader in the classics alongside Thor Hushovd. He should support Cadel Evans in the Tour de France and also act as a mentor for younger riders, including American hopeful Taylor Phinney.

The world's number 2 on this year's rankings, Gilbert says that his objectives are clear: "Going for the one-day classics and then riding the Tour de France to learn and help Cadel."
