Belgian hockey team off to London

The Belgian men’s hockey team the Red Lions has qualified for the semi-finals of the European hockey championships. This in turn means that our boys will be flying the flag for Belgium at next year’s Olympic Games in the British capital London.

The Red Lions were trailing 0-2 against the Spaniards, but were able to turn things around to win their third group stage match 3-2.

The enthusiastic Belgians were the better team early on and Dekeyser came close to putting the Red Lion’s one up, but it was not to be.

Belgium had most of the possession, but Spain was more efficient. Two attacks were all the Spaniards needed to take a two-goal lead.

The second half saw the Belgians come under sustained attack early on. Only an excellent performance by the Red Lion’s keeper Van Rysselberge saved the day.

Encouraged by the many supporters that had travelled with them, the Belgians turned up the heat. Captain Luyckx made it 2-1 with Boon bringing the Belgians level from a penalty corner.

In a tense final stage, Van Hove cleared the ball from the line and Dekeyser scored the winning goal after having beaten the entire Spanish defence and the Spaniards’ goalkeeper.

Belgium will play the Netherlands in the semi-final.
