Anderlecht jump to the lead in the top flight

In football, Anderlecht squeezed past defending champions KRC Genk in Sunday night's summit match. Club Bruges were held to a draw by Beerschot, which allowed Anderlecht to take over the lead from Bruges. In other action on Sunday, Standard downed Lierse SK.

Both the hosts of KRC Genk (Limburg province) and Anderlecht had been in action in Europa this week. It turned out that the visitors from Brussels had digested this best.

The error-prone Genk players were not able to keep the ball in their ranks. The Limburgers had a couple of chances, but these were missed by striker Christian Benteke (photo on top: Anderlecht goalkeeper Silvio Proto in action).

One goal was enough for Anderlecht. Congolese striker Dieumerci Mbokani headed home the only goal of the match on 74 minutes (small photo, 0-1).

Genk suffered their second defeat of the season and are no longer part of the top 6. It's also the second defeat for newly-arrived Dutch coach Mario Been, after losing the Champions League tie in Leverkusen on Wednesday.

Club Bruges lose first place in final minutes

Beerschot held leaders Club Brugge to a 1-all draw. Bruges looked set for a small victory after a Joseph Akpala goal, but Beerschot upped the pressure in the final 20 minutes and equalised in added time through midfielder Vusumusi Nyoni (dubbed Prince) of Zimbabwe. The late equaliser allows Beerschot to keep their unbeaten status at home.

Standard de Liège, last season's runners-up, upset Lierse SK. Belgian winger Jelle Van Damme and Felipe scored in the first half, 2-0.
