Greg Van Avermaet wins Paris-Tours

Fleming Greg Van Avermaet has won this year's Paris - Tours cycling race. The 26-year-old who rides for BMC only faced competition from Italy's Marco Marcato in the final sprint after they escaped from the pack ten kilometres from the line.

For Greg Van Avermaet this is a first win in a cycling classic, though it's the 40th victory by a fellow countryman in the French race's 105 year history.

The 26-year-old told newsmen: "It's a very special feeling. I was the only member of my team among the leaders and was able to escape together with O'Grady. It wasn't easy to attack. I bided my time and waited for as long as I could. When Marco Marcato rode off I stayed with him. He was an ideal companion."

"This victory is very good for my career. It's important for my status within the team. Next year we'll have a very strong team. I ended among the first three before, but now I've also shown I can win."
