"Set up a rightist emergency cabinet"

Flemish nationalist lawmaker Jan Jambon has repeated his party's call for the establishment of a right-wing emergency cabinet. Mr Jambon's Flemish nationalists are Belgium's largest political party but not involved in the present coalition talks.

Mr Jambon insisted that all parties must decide for themselves whether they want to remain in dire straits together with the Francophone socialists. The Flemish nationalist N-VA is proposing an emergency cabinet with the Flemish and Francophone liberals and the Flemish Christian democrats. The emergency cabinet is needed to implement the EU's six recommendations for Belgium. The nationalists suggest tackling community issues in a later phase.

The proposal for an emergency cabinet is not taken seriously by the other parties. In it there would not be any room for Elio Di Rupo's Francophone socialists, the second political force in the land. The N-VA says that the Francophone socialists are refusing to implement the solutions that the EU is offering us.

Mr Jambon denied that the idea was a dead in the water: "Unusual times require unusual solutions. It is feasible. Just do the sums" he told VRT News.
