New HIV infections up 5.5%

The number of people that are HIV+ rose again in Belgium during 2010. This is in sharp contrast to our neighbour The Netherlands. During last year, a total of 1,196 people living in Belgium learned that they we HIV+. This constitutes a rise in new cases of 2.5% compared with 2009.

The figures come from Scientific Institute for Public Health that looks into cases of HIV and AIDS in Belgium.

Of the new cases where the nationality of the patient is known just 43.3% is Belgian.

One in three new patients is from black Africa. 91% of new HIV patients are men. Three quarters of these contracted HIV as a result of homosexual contact.

Nevertheless, homosexual men make the most effort to protect themselves and most say that the practise safe sex.
