Winger Guillaume Gillet (photos) is emerging as Anderlecht's "Mister Europe" with 2 goals in Athens. First, he put Anderlecht ahead after only 4 minutes, next he wiped out the Greek equaliser with a second goal after 36 minutes (final score: 1-2).
The Belgian brought his tally to 4 goals in Europe this season, and scored 7 times in the Belgian league as well.
The 5th consecutive win keeps Anderlecht in first place in Group L of the Europa League, 3 points ahead of Lokomotiv Moscow of Russia, and 9 ahead of Austria's Sturm Graz. With one game against Lokomotiv to go, the first place in the group can hardly escape Anderlecht. Taking first place would normally allow them to have a weaker opponent in the knock-out phase in the next round of 32.
The Europa League is not the Champions League
Anderlecht's victory came one day after Standard de Liège and Club Bruges won their matches in the Europa League. Standard beat Germany's Hannover 2-0 and also qualified for the next round.
FC Bruges beat Maribor 3-4 in Slovenia but are not completely safe yet. While Portugal's Braga is guaranteed a ticket for the next round, Bruges will have to battle it out with Birmingham for the second ticket.
The Belgian success is in stark contrast with the poor results collected by the Belgian champions KRC Genk in the Champions League. Genk got whipped 5-0 in Chelsea and 7-0 in Valencia and are eliminated.
