Relieved Club Brugge could head to showers

Club Brugge only managed a 1 - 0 win away a Westerlo on Saturday night. What should have been a walk-over was anything but an easy victory for Christoph Daum's new squad.

It was only in the closing stages of the match that Club Brugge discovered an opening in the home team's defence. Two players that had been substituted into the match made the difference. Akpala headed the ball into the net after a little help from Vazquez.

Cercle Brugge experienced a dreadful night losing 2 - 1 at home against Kortrijk. The result takes Kortrijk alongside Cercle Brugge in the standings. Cercle have only managed one point from their three last matches.

Lierse and KV Mechelen were equally matched. Mechelen seemed on course for victory, but Lierse managed to equalise in extra time thanks to Amado.

Zulte Waregem drew 1 - 1 against Lokeren. Serwy was first to score but De Ceulaer soon equalised.

Mons travelled to Sint-Truiden to win 3 - 2. Perbet of France made two of Mons's goal. He has netted 15 balls so far this season.

Earlier on Friday night Beerschot inflicted a 2 - 0 defeat on champions Genk. For Genk this was the third defeat in a row.

Anderlecht that play later today lead the Belgian first division. AA Gent that travel to Standard tonight are second with Club Brugge third. Standard are fourth with Kortrijk and Mechelen fifth and sixth. Westerlo remain bottom.
