Top ref says goodbye to Belgian soccer

After a 3 - 1 home win against Beerschot Westerlo are no longer bottom of the Belgian First Division. A goalless draw against KV Mechelen was enough to take Sint-Truiden playing at home to the last spot in the top flight.

Westerlo trainer Jan Ceulemans only had 16 fit players to choose from to make up his squad but clearly made the right choices. For Beerschot that had their thoughts more on their advance in the Belgian Cup this was a stunning defeat. Beerschot are now 9th in the league.

It was also a good evening for Mons that travelled to Zulte Waregem to win 3 - 2. This was a landmark match for another reason too. It was the last game to be refereed by the Belgian international referee Frank De Bleeckere. The ref showed Dachelet red obliging the home eleven to continue with ten on the pitch.

Mons are 8th in the standings. Zulte Waregem 14th - just outside the relegation zone.

In the lower regions Lierse performed well against Kortrijk winning at home 2 - 0. This, only Lierse’s third win of the season, takes the club to 13th place in the standings. Kortrijk are 4th.

Sunday’s match between Standard and Genk was a goalless draw. Genk are four points adrift of Standard that are fourth in the league. Genk are seventh.

Friday's match between Cercle Brugge and AA Gent was called off due to heavy rain.
