Home prices shoot through the roof

Houses and building land have never been more expensive in Belgium. Figures from the Belgian Economy Ministry show that the average terraced house now costs 190,000 euros.

For an apartment home buyers will now have to fork out 200,000 euros on average.

Luc Machon of the Belgian Real Estate Institute says that prices have risen 5% in only a year's time: "First and foremost I have to say this is good news because homes form an important part of our wealth and they have not lost any of their value. You have to take the claim that houses have never been more expensive with a pinch of salt. If you take account of inflation you see that home prices have only risen 1% in real terms."

At the beginning of last year home prices fell slightly, but the fall was short-lived.
