One goal decides clash of the titans

In football, Club Brugge narrowly beat Standard de Liège (1-0) in Sunday's clash of the titans. FC Bruges give their titles hopes a boost and leapfrog AA Gent to reclaim second place in the top flight.

Club Bruges were the best team before the break, with Standard having the better opportunities in the second half. However, where Bruges managed to score early in the match through Igor Refaelov, Standard missed their chances. Swedish defender Michael Almeback sweeped a ball off the line to save FC Bruges.

Bruges coach Christoph Daum noticed "a lot of character and team spirit" in his squad. "We kept on fighting 'till the end. I have to congratulate my players."

Standard midfielder Sébastien Pocognoli realises that Standard will have to watch out now, or they will miss the play-offs for the title. "We deserved a point, because we dominated after the break."
