Injury time goal earns Club Brugge a point

After Sunday evening's defeat at the hands of KV Kortrijk, Club Brugge desperately needed to take all three points from their game at Standard if they were to make up ground on the league-leaders Sporting Anderlecht. The match started promisingly for the visitors Club’s Joseph Akpala saw his legitimate goal disallowed for offside in the opening minutes of the game.

At the other end, Gakpé wasn’t allowed to continue his attack as he too was adjudged to be offside.

Club controlled the midfield, but gave too much away at the back. The visitors had the lion’s share of the chances.

However, the Standard keeper Sinan Bolat was on good form and the half ended goalless.

The second half saw Standard push Club Brugge back.

Standard’s efforts were rewarded when they were awarded a penalty after Tom Högli pulled Nacho Gonzalez inside the box. Mémé Tchité converted and it was 1-0 to Standard.

The Club Brugge Coach Christoph Daum brought in Carlos Bacca and Ryan Donk, but this changed little initially. Club’s goal eventually came in the fifth minute of injury time through Ryan Donk.

Club Brugge is second in Play-off I with 35 points. Standard is fifth with 28 points.
