Waasland-Beveren promoted

Waasland-Beveren has gained promotion to Belgian football’s First Division. On day 5 of the Second Division play-offs, the East Flemings drew one-all at KV Oostende, leaving them 5 points ahead of nearest rival KAS Eupen with just one match to go. The match between Westerlo-Eupen and Eupen also ended 1-1.

Waasland-Beveren took the lead early on through Onana. However, the visitors allowed KV Oostende to take the initiative and the home side drew level after an hour of play through Luissint.

The score remained 1-1 until the final whistle, after which the hundreds of visiting supporters celebrated their team’s promotion to the top flight after an absence of five years.

Waasland-Beveren is the result of a merger between the twice Belgian Champions SK Beveren and near-neighbours Red Star Waasland.

Buffalos end season in style

AA Gent beat Cercle Brugge 2-1 in the return leg of the play-off for a place in the preliminary round of next season’s Europa League.

The Buffaloes already had a 5-1 advantage from Thursday’s first leg. This made for an aggregate score of 7-2 in the East Flemings’ favour.
